Rajma in Tomato gravy

Rajma also known as Kidney beans is an integral part of the North Indian cuisine. Kidney beans, like other beans, are rich in soluble and insoluble fiber. They help to prevent constipation.This recipe can be prepared very quickly and is also nutritious. When you return home after a hectic day, you can prepare this nutritious and healthy recipe in a jiffy if you had soaked rajma for 6 hours. Today let us learn how to prepare this quick rajma gravy/kidney beans gravy (without onion and garlic) following this easy recipe.

   Ingredients needed

   Rajma/Kidney beans – 1 cup
   Chilli powder – 3/4 tsp
   Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
   Garam masala – 1 tsp
   Coriander powder – 1 tsp
   Salt as required

   For Grinding

   Ripe juicy tomatoes – 3 (big)
   Green chilli -1 deseeded
   Ginger -1 inch piece

   For the seasoning

   Oil -2 tbsp
   Cumin seeds -1/2 tsp
   Asafoetida/hing – a pinch

Preparation 

Wash rajma and soak it for 6- 8 hours. Pressure cook rajma with a little salt until soft.

Grind tomatoes, green chilli and ginger to a fine paste and keep it ready.

Method 

Heat oil in a pan, add the ingredients mentined under seasoning.When cumin seeds/jeera sizzles, add the ground paste, turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala and coriander powder. Cook until oil separates.

Then add the cooked rajma along with needed water (use the water in which rajma was cooked), needed salt and cook for a few minutes on low flame.

Garnish with coriander leaves. This goes well with hot rice, phulkas and chapati.

  • What is the water to rajma ratio to be cooked in the pressure cooker which is to be later on added to the sautéd gravy?

  • Very very good and tasty receive especially without onion and garlic.this receive is ideal for viradam days and for people who don't tale onion or garlic like my mother in law.
