Sesame seeds are a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, Vitamin B1,Vitamin E, zinc and dietary fiber. Since it has vitamin E, it is good for the skin also. It is used widely in homemade bread, muffins and cookies. They add great flavor to the dish. I love this rice for its flavor and simplicity. If you have sesame seed powder kept ready, this ellu sadam/sesame seed rice can be prepared in a jiffy. It is usually served with papads, appalam, chips or roasted potatoes. Today we will learn how to make sesame seed rice (ellu sadam in Tamil) following this easy recipe.

Ingredients needed
White Sesame seeds/ ellu -100 grams
Whole Urad dal -1/4 cup
Cumin seeds/jeera seeds -1 tbsp
Whole black pepper- 1/2 tbsp
Red chillies -8-9
Salt as needed
For the sesame seed rice
Cooked rice – as needed
Sesame seed Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – a sprig
Ghee – 1 tsp
Method for preparing Sesame Seed Powder
Heat a pan and dry roast sesame seeds on medium heat stirring continuously until it splutters. Leave it to cool. Then grind it just for a few seconds.(operate the mixie at intervals and not at a stretch).If you grind it for a long time, the sesame seeds will ooze out oil.
In the same pan, dry roast urad dal until it turns golden brown. Then dry roast red chillies, cumin seeds and pepper separately. Powder everything together a little coarse with salt needed.
Then add roasted sesame seed powder to the above and dry grind it just for a second.
Our ellu podi/sesame seed powder is ready now. We will see how to prepare sesame seed rice/ellu sadam.
For Sesame Seed Rice
Cook rice until soft. When rice is warm, add a tsp of sesame seed oil and spread it on a plate to cool.
Mix needed amount of sesame seed powder with the cooked rice.
Heat 1 tbsp of sesame seed oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal and curry leaves. When dal turns golden brown, add the seasoning to the rice and gently mix it. Top it with a tsp of ghee/clarified butter.
Sesame seed rice is ready to be serve with potato chips, papads or potato curry.
Storage and Shelf Life – Store it in an airtight container at room temperature. Stays fresh for more than a month.
Note – You can use white or black sesame seeds for making this rice. You can prepare this rice with white rice, brown rice or millets. You can also prepare this with leftover rice.
