Plantain Curry-Plantain Curry Recipe-Valakkai Curry

Raw Banana/Plantain is called Vazhakkai in Tamil. Plantain curry is very simple to prepare. It tastes delicious with rice and sambar and also with rice and rasam. I prepare plantain curry in two ways – one with coconut and another with chilli powder without onion and garlic which I am sharing it here. Today we will learn how to make vazhakkai curry (Brahmin style) following this very simple recipe.

How about a plantain peel necklace?

Vazhakkai Curry-Plantain Curry

 Prep Time : 5 mins

Cook Time : 25 mins
Serves: 2
Recipe Category: Side dish
Recipe Cuisine: South Indian-Tamil Brahmin Iyer

   Ingredients needed

   Plantain/vazhakkai -2
Chilli Powder -3/4-1 tsp ( or as required)
   Turmeric Powder -1/4 tsp
   Salt – as required

   For the seasoning

   Oil -3 tbsp
   Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
   Asafoetida -a pinch
   Curry leaves – few leaves

Preparation

Peel the skin and cut the plantain into semi circles or cubes.

Now mix salt, chilli powder and turmeric powder to the plantain pieces and keep it aside for 10-15 minutes.

Method

Heat oil in a kadai/pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add hing and curry leaves. Then add the plantain pieces and cook covered on low fire, stirring from time to time until tender. Sprinkle very less water once or twice in between while cooking.

For more flavor, you can add a tsp of vegetable curry powder. It is my own spice blend. It adds more flavor to the curry. Click the link for the recipe.

Plantain/Vazhakkai curry is ready to be served with rice.

Note – If you are not going to cook plantain immediately after chopping, then keep it in a bowl of water to prevent discoloration.

I have used homemade chilli powder, if using store bought ones, use a little less.
