Ingredients needed
Daliya – 1/2 cup
Onion -1 finely chopped
Green chilli – 1 finely chopped
Ginger-garlic paste -1/2 tsp
Carrot – 1 finely chopped
Beans – 5-6 finely chopped
Chilli powder – 1/2 tsp (optional)
Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
For the seasoning
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – a sprig
For Garnishing
Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp finely chopped
Ghee/clarified butter – 2 tsp
Preparation
Chop all the vegetables finely.
Dry roast dalia until a little hot to touch or until you get a slight aroma of roasted dalia.
Soak daliya in 1 1/2 cup of hot water for 10 minutes. (quantity of water differs according to the quality of dalia)
Method
Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, when it splutters, add finely chopped onions, green chilli, curry leaves and saute till onions turn transparent.
Add ginger-garlic paste (or finely chopped ginger and garlic) and saute for a few more minutes.
Add carrot, beans, chilli powder, coriander powder and salt needed. Mix well.
Add the soaked dalia along with the water. Taste the water to check for salt. If needed add at this stage.
Then pressure cook for 3 whistles keeping it in a vessel inside the cooker as shown in the picture below.
Once the pressure subsides, open the cooker, add 2 tsp of ghee, garnish with coriander leaves, mix well and serve hot.
This khichdi should not be like upma but should be mushy.
Note – You can add a fistful of fresh green peas and 2-3 florets of chopped cauliflower also.
You can prepare this adding moong dal also. Soak 2 tbsp of moong dal along with dalia and pressure cook. If you are cooking directly in pressure cooker, 1-2 whistles is sufficient but take care not to burn it.
If you are on a diet, you can skip ghee.
