I have posted Mango rice (mango masala rice) earlier which is totally different from this recipe. This is another version of Mango rice (Andhra style) prepared with raw mangoes. It is very easy to prepare, needs less ingredients and tastes similar to the South Indian Lemon Rice. If you love lemon rice, then you will definitely love this mango rice also. In this recipe,we are adding grated mangoes instead of lemon juice to give a tangy taste to the dish. Today we will learn how to make mango rice following this easy recipe.

Ingredients needed
Cooked Rice – 3 cup
Grated mango -1 cup
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt as needed
For the seasoning
Oil – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Bengal gram/channa dal -2 tsp
Urad dal -1 1/2 tsp
Red chillies -2 (break it into 2 pieces)
Hing -a pinch
Green chillies -2 slit
Peanuts -1/4 cup
Curry leaves – few
Preparation
Cook rice in such a way that each grain remains separate. Spread it on a plate to cool.
Wash, peel and grate raw mangoes.
Fry peanuts separately and keep it aside. (You can also fry along with dal in medium flame but should take care not to burn the peanuts)
Method
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add bengal gram, urad dal, red chillies, green chillies and hing.
When dal turns golden brown, add peanuts, turmeric powder, salt needed and curry leaves.
Add grated mangoes and mix well to combine with the spices. Cook for just 2-3 seconds and switch off the flame.
Add cooked rice and mix gently using a fork taking care not to break the rice. Check for salt, add if required.
Enjoy mango rice with chips or papads as side dish.
Notes – Use sour/tangy mangoes for this dish. If your mangoes are not sour enough, then add a little more than 1 cup.
You can add cashew nuts instead of peanuts if you prefer.
You can use left over rice also for this recipe.
In Karnataka, they make a similar version of raw mango rice during festivals called Maavinakayi Chitranna in which they add a little grated coconut (2-3 tbsp) in the end.
