Pidi Kozhukattai-Kara Kolukattai Recipe-Ganesh Chaturthi Special 2014

This is another very traditional, simple and easy breakfast recipe. Vinayaka Chaturthi 2014, falls on August 29th, Friday. As I have already posted the main or important dishes like vella kozhukattai and uppu kolukattai prepared for Vinayaka Chaturthi, I wanted to post this simple recipe prepared with the same rice flour used for vella-sweet kozhukattai and uppu kolukattai. Today we will learn how to make pidi kozhukattai or kara kolukattai following this easy recipe with step wise pictures.

Pidi Kozhukattai-Kara Kozhukattai Recipe

Prep Time : 5 mins (excluding rice preparation)

Cook Time : 20 mins
Yields:12 Kozhukattais
Recipe Category: Breakfast
Recipe Cuisine: South Indian

   Ingredients needed

   Rice flour -1 cup
   Salt needed

   For the seasoning

   Oil -2 1/2 tbsp
   Mustard seeds -1 tsp
   Split Urad dal -1 tsp
   Bengal gram-channa dal -1 tbsp
   Red Chillies -4
   Hing/asafoetida -a pinch
   Curry leaves – few
Grated coconut -3/4 cup (fresh preferable)

Preparation

Prepare rice flour in the same method as mentioned in Vella Kozhukattai Recipe. Kindly click the link for the recipe of rice flour.

Method

Heat oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal and bengal gram dal, when dal turns golden brown, add red chillies, hing and curry leaves.

Then add grated coconut and saute for a few minutes.

Add 1 1/4 cup of water and salt needed (the quantity of water will vary from 1 cup to 1 1/2 cup for 1 cup of rice flour, depending on the quality of rice). Note – taste the water to check for salt.

When water starts boiling, lower the flame, add the rice flour with one hand and keep stirring continously with the other hand to prevent formation of lumps.

Cook covered for 5-6 minutes on low flame. Remove from heat and transfer to a plate.

When it is warm, make oval shapes, keep it in your palm, close and press it to give the shape as seen in the picture. This is the reason, it is called pidi Kozhukattai.  Pidi in Tamil language means “to hold”.

Now arrange all the prepared pidi kozhukattais in a greased idli mold and steam cook for 15 minutes or until done.

Serve hot with tomato chutney or kaara chutney.

A heavenly combination!!!

    • I have tired kozhukattai with store bough rice flour. It is not as soft as the kozhukattai prepared by this method. But since you have not mixie, you can use ready made idiyappam flour which is better than store bough rice flour.

  • Delicious and lovely looking kozhukattais. Just apt for the upcoming vinayaka Chaturthi.
