Ingredients needed
Wheat flour – 1/2 cup
Banana – 1 small size
Jaggery – 1/3 cup
Rice flour – 2 tsp
Cooking soda – a pinch
Cardamom powder – ¼ tsp
Grated coconut – 2 tbsp
Salt – a pinch
Ghee/clarified butter -1 1/2 -2 tbsp
Paniyaram pan
Preparation
Dissolve jaggery in very less water, filter it and keep it aside to cool.
Keep all the ingredients ready.
Method
In a bowl, mix together wheat flour, mashed banana, rice flour, cooking soda, cardamom powder, salt and grated coconut.
Add jaggery water and mix well.
Add more water and mix well to form a lump free batter. The consistency of the batter should be that of idli batter consistency.
Heat a paniyaram pan, add 1/2 tsp ghee in all the holes.
Then fill the holes with the prepared batter. Reduce the heat and cook covered.
When the corners start to loosen, flip it over to the other side with a skewer.
Cook uncovered until golden brown. Insert a toothpick in the center of the appam, if it comes out clean, the appam is cooked.
Enjoy making these delicious soft and spongy appams for Krishna Jayanthi or even Vinayagar Chaturthi.

Hi Padhu,
Thanks for posting instant appam recipe.
Looks very nice.
But I have a small doubt here.
For Neivedyam, we do not use cooking soda though you have recommended only a pinch.
Please advise if appam can be done by this method without soda as for neivedyam we will not normally use soda.
Since Gokulashtami is very close, wanted to have your feedback.
Thanks,
Mahalakshmi
You can do this without cooking soda also. The banana will give the softness needed. Mine was very soft and spongy.
Thanks so much Padhu for the prompt response.
This is a much easier method than washing rice, soaking it, grinding it, etc.
Thanks again,
Mahalakshmi
Hi Padhu, I am a great fan of your website. I love all the receipes that you make and try most of them. Just a suggestion from me, Why don't you publish a receipe book with these receipes. I am sure there will be more users who can benefit with the same, like those who don't get net accessibility.

Dear Padhu, can the appams be deep fried in a normal pan like frying Vadas.
Yes, you can deep fry as vadas . Check out my sweet appam where I have deep fried in a normal frying pan.
Hi padhu. I plan to make these appams for neivedyam today for kartigai deepam. But don't have banana. Is it okay without that and of course we don't use cooking soda. Please advice
You cannot omit banana as it is banana which gives softness to this appam. I have another traditional neyyappam. Check that also Neyyappam with jaggery
Hi padu! Just finished making appams for today's karthigai Deepam following your recipe. They look very nice. Will Update about the taste after neivedhyam is over. Am sure it will be good. Thank you
Can i skip rice flour
Rice flour gives crispness. You can skip if you do not want to add.
