Cluster beans is known as Gawar ki Phalli in Hindi and Kothavarangai in Tamil. This is a simple kootu that does not require any grinding. I have prepared this kootu without coconut. This kootu goes well with rice. As it is a Tamil Brahmin style kootu, it does not have onion and garlic also. Today we will learn how to make cluster beans paruppu kootu without coconut following this easy recipe with step wise pictures.

Ingredients needed
Tender Cluster Beans – 250 grams or 2 cups chopped
Tur Dal – 1/4 cup
Rice flour – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt needed
For the seasoning
Oil – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Red Chillies – 3
Hing – a pinch
Curry leaves – a sprig
For Garnishing
Coriander leaves- 1 tbsp finely chopped
Preparation
Cut the top and tail and string the cluster beans. Wash and cut it into small pieces as seen in the picture below.
Soak tur dal in hot water for 15 minutes and pressure cook with 1/4 tsp turmeric powder for 3 whistles. Mash it well and keep it aside. Check out how to cook dal, if you are new to cooking dal.
Mix rice flour with 2 tbsp of water and keep it aside. This is used to thicken the kootu.
Method
In a heavy bottomed vessel or kadai, add the chopped cluster beans, enough water to cover the cluster beans (I added 1 cup of water), turmeric powder and few curry leaves. Cook covered until the cluster beans becomes tender.
Once the cluster beans becomes tender, add the cooked and mashed dal.
Add water needed and rice flour mixture. Cook on medium heat until the kootu thickens.
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal, red chillies, hing and curry leaves. When dal turns golden brown, pour the seasoning over the kootu.
Simmer for another 2-3 minutes. The consistency of the kootu should neither be too watery nor too thick.
Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and serve hot as a side dish for rice.
Another way to have this kootu is to mix it with rice, top it with a tsp of ghee and enjoy it hot. You can have any vegetable curry or papads or pickle as a side dish for this.
