Raw papaya (pappali kai in Tamil) contains many essential nutrients and minerals which are good for our well being. It also contains active enzymes called papain, which helps improve digestive disorders. Being high in fiber content, they also help beat constipation. I make it a point to include raw papaya once in 15 days. This kootu made with raw papaya is very delicious and similar to chow chow kootu. Nobody will find the difference unless you tell them. Today we will learn how to make kootu with raw/green papaya following this easy recipe with step wise pictures.

Ingredients needed
Raw Papaya – 2 cups chopped
Green chilli – 1
Tomato – 1
Moong Dal – 1/3 cup
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt needed
For Grinding
Coconut – 1/4 cup
Green chilli – 1
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
For the Seasoning
Oil – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Red chillies – 1
Asafoetida/hing – a pinch
Shallots – 6-7 or 1 small onion
Curry leaves – a sprig
For Garnishing
Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp finely chopped
Preparations
Grind coconut, green chilli and cumin seeds to a smooth paste.
Peel the skin, discard the seeds and chop raw papaya into medium sized pieces.
Method
In a cooker, add chopped raw papaya, moong dal (or a mix of moong dal and tur dal), chopped tomato, green chilli, turmeric powder, a cup of water and salt needed. (moong dal – pasi paruppu in Tamil).
Pressure cook for 2 or 3 whistles.
Once the pressure subsides, open the cooker and add the ground paste.
Mix well and boil for 4-5 minutes on low heat, stirring from time to time.
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it sizzles, add urad dal, red chillies and hing. When dal turns golden brown, add chopped onions and curry leaves.
Saute until onions turn transparent. Then add to the kootu and mix well.
Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
Note – You can prepare this kootu without onions also. Just skip the onions while seasoning.
