Ingredients needed
Broken wheat – 1 1/4 cup
Tur dal – 3 tbsp
Coconut – 1/3 cup grated
Carrot – 1 small grated (optional)
Water – 3 3/4 cup
Salt needed
For the Seasoning
Oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Urad dal – 2 tsp
Bengal gram dal (Chana dal) – 2 tsp
Hing/asafoetida – a generous pinch
Red Chillies – 2-3
Curry leaves – a sprig
Preparations
Dry roast cracked wheat (samba godhumai rava) until hot to touch.
Soak tur dal in hot water for half and hour. Drain the water and grind it coarsely without adding water.
Method
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal, chana dal (kadalai paruppu), hing, red chillies and curry leaves.
When dal turns golden brown, add the ground tur dal.
Saute for a 2-3 minutes on low heat and then add grated coconut and carrot.
Saute for few seconds, add water and salt needed. (taste the water to check for salt, if the water is slightly salt, it will be perfect once the upma is done).
When water starts boiling, reduce the heat and add cracked wheat rava gradually with one hand and stir continuously with your other hand to prevent formation of lumps.
Cook covered stirring at regular intervals until all the water evaporates.
Leave it to cool. Once it is warm, divide the mixture equally and make ball out of it. You can dip your hands slightly in water when shaping balls to prevent it from sticking to your hands.
Steam cook the balls for 10 minutes in a steamer or you can even use the pressure cooker for steaming but without weight.
Once done, remove from the steamer. Enjoy it with hotel sambar or kathirikkai gothsu or sutta kathirikkai gothsu .
