Coconut thogayal / thuvaiyal is different from Coconut chutney. Coconut chutney can be had as a side dish for idly, dosa, pongal and chapati but does not go well with rice. But coconut thuvaiyal can be had with all the above and with plain rice also. Mix coconut thogayal with hot steaming rice topped with a tsp of ghee or sesame seed oil – it will taste heavenly. All you need is some papads/chips or fried vegetable curry to go with. Try it and you will not regret it. This is a very simple recipe which can be done in a matter of 5 minutes.

Ingredients needed
Coconut (grated) -1/2 cup
Oil – 2 tsp
Mustard seed -1/2 tsp
Urad dal – 2 tbsp
Red chillies – 3
Whole black Pepper -1/4 tsp (optional)
Hing/ Asafoetida – a pinch
Tamarind – (very less) small pea sized ball
Curry leaves – 2 sprigs (optional)
Salt to taste
Method
Heat 2 tsp of oil, add mustard seeds, when mustard splutters, add urad dal, pepper, red chilies and hing.
Saute until dal turns golden brown, then add curry leaves, grated coconut and switch off the flame.
Grind everything together along with tamarind and salt to a coarse paste. Do not add too much water. (see the picture) It should be thick.
Serve it with hot steamed rice topped with a tsp of ghee. You can pair it with a simple vegetable stir fry or vegetable curry.

Hi Padhu..after a long time.
the coconut birds look very cute and the coconut thogayal is something i would love to have with rice as you suggested . For a confused north indian , thogayal looks similar to chutney , thickness is the only difference …is it so ??
i would love anything like this regardless of the name for sure.

hey for coconut chutbey, if we donot have grated coconut, can we use processed coconut paste (canned) available in departmental stores?
PadhuSankar
I don't think that will be good option.Since in India, fresh coconuts are easily available, I have not tried that.Anyway you can try it.
yawanika
Fantastic recipe….was super easy to make….super yummy as well!! Thank you for all the hard work you put in this blog!!

Hi Padhu. Do I just add the tamarind directly with all the fibers? Sorry I have only used tamarind by boiling it to make tamarind water.
Padhu Sankar
Yes, you can add it directly after removing the seed and the fiber. If you want to use tamarind extract, just use 1/2 tsp of thick tamarind extract.
michelle pederson
Thanks!

for vegetable thogaiyals I used to add pearl onions. but since this is of plain coconut which I haven't tried before, I have a doubt whether v can add small onions r not. could u pl clarify my doubt..
Padhu Sankar
You can add pearl onions to vegetable thogaiyals. Avoid adding to this coconut thuvaiyal. Enjoy the taste of the coconut. This tastes awesome with steamed rice and a tsp of ghee.
