According to the Ministry of Health, babies should be exclusively breastfed until they’re around six months old. Breastfeeding gives a baby the best possible start in life – and it’s good for the health and well being of mothers too. Once your baby completes 6 months and he/she is ready for it, you can start introducing a variety of food slowly, in addition to breastfeeding. Kindly read my post on Porridge Recipes for Babies before proceeding to this post. Before you begin to introduce any solid food to your baby, consult your pediatrician.Today we will learn how to make Khichdi for babies.
Dal Khichdi for Babies
Prep Time : 5 mins | Cook Time : 15 Mins |
Ingredients needed
Rice – 2 tbsp (cooked)
Moong dal or Tur dal-1 tbsp
Water -1 cup
Turmeric powder- a pinch
Salt- a pinch
Ghee- 1/4 tsp
Kichadi (paruppu sadam) is a traditional, simple and nutritious food for babies.
Method
Wash and soak rice and dal in 3/4-1 cup of water for 1/2 an hour.
Add a pinch of turmeric powder, a pinch of salt and pressure cook for 4 whistles.
Once the pressure subsides, open the cooker, mash the rice and dal well until it becomes smooth and creamy.
Add 1/4 tsp of ghee and mix well. Feed the baby when it is warm with a spoon.
Note-The khichdi should be semi solid. The khichdi will thicken as it becomes cold. So feed the baby when it is warm. If you want it more creamier, add more water.
Prepare it fresh everyday.Introduce only one new food at a time and wait to see if your baby has any allergic reaction. Once your baby gets adjusted to this, you can add a small bit of carrot along with dal and rice and cook until mushy.

Fed my daughter for 6 months and feel good that she is healthy and happy. It also is a good bonding experience and I actually felt a little sad as I began to start the bottle and solids.

Can we give this to 7 month old baby
Padhu Sankar
Yes, you can give but start with very less quantity. It should be very mushy and warm. Wait and see if it suits the baby, if yes, then you can continue and increase gradually. Baby knows best.
