Hi,
Can we use red puzhungal arisi (matta rice) or is it ponni puzhukkal that we need to use ?
Your site is really very helpful !! Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Sreelakshmi
Padhu Sankar
Minu – Thank you so much. Glad you find my site helpful. Par boiled rice is easy to digest for babies. That is why I have use puzhukkal arisi. Consult your pediatrician, if you can give red rice to babies. If the doctor says "yes", you can substitute white par boiled rice with red puzhungal arisi.
janu
hi can i use any millet rice rather than normal rice
sweetygirl28
Hi padhu nice post. I want to try these but there isn't any flour mills here in Oman. Can you pls suggest alternatives or any other healthy porridge for 1 year babies? Thanks in advance 🙂
Padhu Sankar
You can prepare it with less quantity and grind it in the mixie, sieve it and store it. I have given for 1/4 kg (ie) 250 grams. You can half the recipe and try it. (Indian mixer grinder can grind it to some extent) Alternatively, if you can get ready made kanji healthmix for babies, you can get it after reading the instructions on the pack.
Ruffin's
Really helpful…thanks….my daughters are 3 and 11 months..planning to give both of them the same…we can always do a bit of innovation yourself like adding some dry fruits, cardamom, or vegi's to it.
Ruffin's
Do we have to fry d gram…
Padhu Sankar
After frying everything separately, switch off the heat. Then add fried gram (pottukadalai in tamil) and saute in the heat of the pan.

Hi Padhu, can i make porridge powder for 6 months baby by adding all in one like ragi, wheat, par boiled rice, barley, sago, green gram , black channa , cumin seeds, ajwain n some dry nuts like almond, cashew?
Padhu Sankar
Yes, you can give in less quantity first but do not add almonds and cashews.Prepare in less quantity as it might suit some babies and it might not suit some babies. Always consult your pediatrician before starting any new food for the baby.
Shilpashree Nagaraju
Thank you 🙂

Hi, what is par boiled rice? Can I make them at home with normal rice? Thnx n I love all ur recipes
Padhu Sankar
Parboiled rice (also called converted rice) is rice that has been partially boiled in the husk. The three basic steps of parboiling are soaking, steaming and drying. These steps also make rice easier to process by hand, boost its nutritional profile and change its texture.(source -wiki) You cannot make it at home. You can get it ready made from the grocery store.
Anitha Murali
Very useful n easy recipe for babies.. thanks Padhu for the awesome work 🙂
mom
can raw rice be used for 6months baby
Padhu Sankar
It is not raw rice, it is par boiled rice.
aishwariyaa jeganathan
Hello madam I am having 9 months baby can we grind boiled rice carrot and boiled moong dal altogether in mixie as a food
Padhu Sankar
Yes, you can give but start with less quantity. I am saying this from my experience as I have given boiled rice, boiled carrot and boiled moong dal(very less) to my kids when they were young. You can also consult a pediatrician.
shamiha
Your instructions about feeding infants at soups page are apt..plz do copy paste it over here also…bcoz starting other feeds before 6 months of age and starting other milk, sugar or jaggery bfore 1 yr of age are not ideal..
sudha
Hi
Very nice all ur recipes thanks . Can I give smashed idly for my 7 months old baby and can u tel me why no need to add cashews and almonds for preparing porridge power
Padhu Sankar
Yes, you can give steamed idli to your baby. For babies it is advisable to avoid adding cashews and almonds in the porridge as some babies might be allergic to it.So it is better to add all that once the baby completes 1 year.
Chandra
Dear Padhuan
We eat raw rice only at home.can I use raw rice for making porridge powder…..will it affect stomach of the infant
Padhu Sankar
You can buy a little organic par boiled rice for the baby. It is better to start with par boiled rice as it is easily digestible.
Selvam Sharin
my son is 2 yrs now before he was eating idly rice in the puree form then he stopped eating it then started to eat only puri again stopped that also kow he drinks only milk .i am trying all methods to feed him but not at all eating anything pls help
Padhu Sankar
First consult your pediatrician to find out if he has any problem with his appetite.
Eliteguy
Hi Padhu
Kindly explain why idly rice shouldn't be given added in the porridge for babies.. Is there any significant reason to be avoided? But still we are giving idlis for 6 month old babies right?
Regards
Padhu Sankar
These recipes are followed for generations. I have given this porridge to my own kids when they were young. As the recipe calls for parboiled rice, I have given the recipe as such. What you say has logic, when we give idlis to babies, why not porridge with idli rice.I am not sure of the answer. You can try idli rice with very less quantity. Par boiled rice is easily digestible. I am not sure about idli rice.
prema devi
Hi Padhu.. I am one of the biggest fans of you.. u believe or not.. i spend most of my time in ur site. Really thanks for this wonderful recipes. I had a question here.. Can i use brown rice instead of par boiled rice?
Padhu Sankar
Thank you for liking my blog and recipes. Glad you found it useful. Par boiled rice is used as it is easily digestible for babies.Consult your pediatrician if you can start giving brown rice for your baby. If she/he says yes, you can add.
Geetanjali Varanasi
Hi Padhu,
Could you please let me know the quantity in cups?
I live in US. Planning to make this for my 6 months old daughter in smaller quantities.
It would be of great help.
Thanks in advance
Geeta
Padhu Sankar
I have to measure and then only tell you. I will update it.

Hi Padhu,
What is samba wheat. Is it same as wheat? What they call it in English? Would like to try this for my 4 months baby.
Padhu Sankar
It is a variety of wheat. If you cannot get that you can use regular whole wheat grain.
kuttygayu
hi padhu, when i cook rice with carrots and moong dal for my baby, it does not get mashed up. it stays as rice how much ever times i keep the whistle. please help. and another question, cani give ghee to my baby ? she is 8 months old
Padhu Sankar
Some variety of rice does not get cooked to a mush. So better cook rice separately and keep chopped carrots on the plate you cover the rice vessel.
chitra
